Chichaito – A Shot of Puerto Rican Fun

Chichaito

Do you want to party like a Puerto Rican? I can’t help you with that too much, but I can give you some recipes for a local favorite drink called Chichaito.

Chichaito is a seriously strong alcoholic beverage, made with Anisette liqueur and rum. It is a yummy, anise (licorice) flavored drink, typically served as a shot, though sometimes it is chilled and sipped. It is usually made with cheap brands of alcohol, and it is sometimes available in smaller, local bars for a $1/shot or a few bucks for a pint.

I have tried a few variations, and since I am not a huge fan of black licorice, find Kerry’s recipe more to my liking.

Basic Chichaito Recipe

  • 1 part licorice-flavored liqueur (Anisette or Anis)
  • 1 part white rum (any brand will do)

Kerry’s Chichaito Recipe

This version of the recipe was made for us by Kerry, a friendly local. It is sweeter and more to my liking. But it goes down pretty smoothly, so watch out!

  • 1 part licorice-flavored liqueur (Anisette or Anis)
  • 1 part white rum (any brand will do)
  • ½ part honey
  • ½ part lemon juice

If you are doing a shot, remember to toast to good health — ¡Salud!

Remember to drink responsibly, and never drink & drive.
