Take a Horse & Carriage Tour Around Old San Juan

Posted on Apr 8th, 2008 by Gwenn • Updated on Sep 13th, 2009

Old San Juan Horse Carriage TourYou can capture some of the history of Old San Juan, while moving about town like in the old days, while taking a horse and carriage tour through the Old City. The horse and carriage rides start near the Casita area, on the Bay of San Juan, just west of the cruise ship docks. Reservations are not needed, as there are usually about four to choose from (when cruise ships are in port), each with different colored horses and different carriages (some are open, some are covered). So choose your favorite horse or carriage and enjoy!

This is a narrated tour that takes you through the Old City. Your driver will tell you about the city and the things you are passing. Or for a more romantic ride, tell the driver you don’t need a tour, just the ambiance.

This is a delightful way to tour around. It also is nice in the late afternoon, or when you want to take a nice tour but are too tired to walk around. One of the best parts about it is that children under 12 ride for free with an adult. That way, you won’t go broke if your child falls in love with a horse and has to take a ride!

They offer 3 tours with slightly different routes.

Tour #1 is about 20 minutes long. It goes through town and passes things like the City Hall, Plaza de Armas and Fortaleza. The cost for this tour is $35/couple, and each additional person is $15.

Tour #2 about 30 minutes long. It goes past the Capital building, San Cristobal Fort and Plaza Colon. The cost for this tour is $50/couple, and each additional person is $15.

Tour #3 is a combination of the other two tours. It is about 45 minutes long. The cost for this tour is $75/couple, and each additional person is $15.

You can contact the Caribbean Carriage Corporation at 787.960.2750 or 787-360-5686 for more information.

They do offer evening rides, depending on the cruise ship schedule (until about 9pm).
Maximum 6 adults to a tour. Children under 12 years old are free with adult.
If you just want to take a photograph with the horse and carriage and not go on the tour, that costs $5.
The horse and carriage rides are available for private occasions (such as weddings) with prior notice. Contact the carriage operators for prices.

The horse carriages are located next to the Casita and across the street from the PT Tourism Company Visitor information Center, near the cruise ship piers. They are usually only there when cruise ships are in port.

You can locate the horse & carriage rides on our Interactive Island Map
