Loves this entry! I am currently in PR and wish I was flying AA back just to be able to help. Unfortunately we already have booked flights on US Air and that won't work. I'm hoping to contact the shelter and see if I can provide food or other items we can acquire locally to bring to the shelters. We've made "friends" with several satos while staying here at the beach and feel badly they don't have homes. We've also noticed many stray cats around and my son has given them names. It's cute, but what will happen to them when we leave? We hope they will find good homes and somehow be happy.

I found your great website while looking for information for a trip to puerto rico. When I saw this article, I was amazed at what a great thing this is. I don't like to fly on american airlines, but am thinking about making an exception for this cause. Thanks for posting!

Really wish there were other airlines involved besides American. I fly back and forth at least twice a year and would love to be an escort!I will be shipping another puppy back this trip on my own "dime" (@ $300) to a good home in Baltimore where there is already one pup from last year living happily!! Too bad the airlines can't reduce the price a bit more for these needy dogs, but at least they are involved!
Glad I happened upon this info.

I have spoken with Twig from All Satos Rescue- there has been lots of support for this program from you PRDayTrip readers! Thanks!
She wanted to let people know, the rescue groups here in PR really only use American Airlines as the transport airline. So people flying on other airlines won't be able to be an escort.
But if you are able to help in other ways (monetarily, or with supplies or volunteer work etc) , please feel free to contact them.

To clarify and answer Chris' comment - the airlines charge $150.00 per kennel, and the rescue organizations pay the entire amount themselves, being a sato escort costs the passenger nothing, but gives them a great feeling by helping us transport the satos to our partner shelters.

Yes, that's true that the airlines charge to take a dog on the plane with a passenger. But, for what we're talking about in the article, the rescue organization covers the cost of shipping the dog. The volunteer "escort" pays nothing extra.

Just to let you know most airlines charge about $80 for a dog to go with a passenger with a ticket. Its not free like luggage. Even if the dog is in a carry on container it still costs the same

I LOVE that you posted this. I booked my tickets to Puerto Rico back in Feb and have been finalizing my travel plans over the past couple of months. (I can't wait to come stay at Coqui's Hideaway!!)

I've known about Save a Sato for a while as there is a rescue group here in Washington State that brings dogs all the way here for adoption. I was disappointed to learn (after I had already bought my tickets on Delta) that American Airlines is the primary airline :(

I decided to try and do something else to support Save a Sato so I copied down their wish list items and I am working through the summer on trying to acquire as much as I can to have shipped/bring with me to PR when I visit in November.

I may be changing my return trip to stop over in Miami/Fort Lauderdale to visit family on my way home to Seattle so once I have that finalized, I will still contact the orgs in PR and see if perhaps I can be an escort for that leg of my journey.

One of the reasons I decided to stay at your property was because you have a love for and have taken in rescue dogs. I too have rescued fur-kids and I also foster "death row doggies" for a Seattle rescue group.

Big hugs,
Carrie
