See Some Remnants of the Sugarcane Era in Humacao
Sugarcane used to be the money crop here in Puerto Rico for many years. But most of the growing and processing of sugar came to an end in the middle of the last century. Unfortunately, there is not a lot left to see from that time — most everything has either been demolished, or left to rust away. So, when I saw this little sugar treasure hidden in a housing development, I had to point it out. There is a locomotive (the boiler and frame of Baldwin #5), and some rusting metal parts of the sugar processing enclosed inside a fenced area in Humacao. It makes a nice quick stop.
Humacao is on the east coast of Puerto Rico. There used to be loads of sugar grown in the area, and even two sugar processing plants in the town. The processing plant Central El Ejemplo used to be located in town, just down the road to the west. I assume this material is from that plant, but I could be wrong. The plant closed in 1961.
In the housing development called “Jardin Central”, at the end of Calle Coloso, you will find a fenced area. You go inside and check out an old locomotive, some sugar boiling bowls, and some parts from the processing plant. I couldn’t find any information on this stuff anywhere, I would be interested in know where it was from and how it got to its current location!
The housing community has a gate house, but it was vacant when we went, and the exit gate was up. So I assume that you can just go in the out gate (as we did).

This is a quick stop, just long enough to take some photos.
Enter the development “Jardin Central” on Calle Ejemplo, and make the first right onto Calle Coloso. The train is at the end of the road.
