Puerto Rico Orchid Shows 2010

Ahhh … spring. Being originally from the north-eastern States, flower shows were always a rite of passage for the beginning of springtime. We’re happy that we can continue that tradition here in Puerto Rico.

We spent some time today at the annual Puerto Rico Orchid Society Show & Sale just outside of San Juan. Even though we now live in the land of perpetual summer, it’s still nice to see the change of seasons. And, yes, if you spend enough time here you will notice a change in the trees and flowers as the seasons progress.

Colores de mi Tierra

This year’s Festival de Orquídeas is called Colores de mi Tierra (Colors of my Land). There are about 16 displays and about 10 vendors selling orchids, heliconias, bromeliads and assorted orchid gardening stuff. There were lots of flowers to be seen and purchased — some common and some very unusual. Some of the plants are grown locally, though many have been imported from Hawaii and Thailand.

As always, we did our part to help support the local economy. Though how many orchids do you really need? Seriously. We haven’t figured that out yet.

Anyway … we bought more plants than we needed, talked to some old friends (we used to belong to the Puerto Rico Orchid Society before we got too "busy" … whatever that means), and had a fun afternoon. If you get a chance to go this weekend, stop by and help out some local small businesses.
