Isla Mata la Gata – A Tiny Island Paradise
Feb 16th, 2012 • By Gwenn • Category: Beach, Nature, Porta Caribe (South), Snorkeling, Water SportsThe mangrove cayos in La Parguera are really something to see. They are tiny specks of green in middle of the blue ocean. Most are nothing more than clumps of mangroves and broken coral. However, there is one in particular – Mata de Gata – that has the facilities that you need to make a perfect setting for a picnic. Being an island, you will need a kayak, boat or another type of watercraft out to it. But once there, you may never want to leave
Take it to the Top of Cidra on an ATV
Feb 5th, 2012 • By Gwenn • Category: Central Region, TourThe central mountain range of Puerto Rico offers some amazing views. Of course, that is if you can get to the top of the mountains. Hacienda Madrigal in Cidra offers a fun and easy way to get to there — on an ATV. We enjoyed an hour-long ride through this beautiful hacienda, with pretty nature all around us, and a view at the top to stop and admire!
Santuario Schoenstatt – A Little Bit of Germany in Cabo Rojo
Jan 19th, 2012 • By Gwenn • Category: Porta Caribe (South), Porta del Sol (West)I know that when you see this cute, little church, you assume it is somewhere in Europe. But this lovely place is actually right here in Puerto Rico! The church is a replica of a church in Germany. The grounds are very beautiful, and they welcome all visitors who want to come and enjoy this peaceful place.

This is one of the few places in Puerto Rico where you can mountain bike along cool and shaded forest trails.
Explore Arecibo Beaches – Miles of Sand and Great Views
Dec 18th, 2011 • By Gwenn • Category: Beach, Nature, Porta Atlantico (North)For a great drive along the north coast, take Road 681 in Arecibo instead of Route 2 or Route 22. This coastal road allows you to stop off and enjoy a number of amazing views and beaches. While the Atlantic Ocean can be too rough to swim during much of the year, it provides a great backdrop for a nice afternoon or quick stop by the beach.
Joyuda – A Seafood Paradise
Dec 1st, 2011 • By Gwenn • Category: Food & Lodging, Porta del Sol (West)When people come to Puerto Rico, they are often bummed to find that fresh seafood is not all that readily available. It really is kind of shocking, being that we’re on an island surround by vast oceans. But there is one area in Puerto Rico that should be known as the seafood heaven — the seaside community of Joyuda, in Cabo Rojo. We stopped in for lunch recently, and were pleasantly surprised.
Kayak and Snorkel Among the Mangroves at La Parguera
Nov 27th, 2011 • By Gwenn • Category: Nature, Porta Caribe (South), Porta del Sol (West), Snorkeling, TourLocated on the southwest coast of the island, La Parguera boasts about 30 tiny mangrove islands just 1 to 5 miles off the shore. Once you get to those mangrove cays, you can swim, snorkel, and ride the currents in the crystal-clear, warm water. We went kayaking there recently with Excursions Ecoboriken. It was a great experience, that was both fun and educational.
Playita Rosada – An Ocean Pool in Parguera
Nov 24th, 2011 • By Gwenn • Category: Beach, Nature, Porta Caribe (South), Porta del Sol (West)What does a town do when they have a beautiful waterfront area, but no natural beaches there? Enclose the ocean, build decks around it, and make an ocean pool. That’s just what the town of Lajas did to create Playa Rosada — it boasts a nice ocean swimming area without the sandy beach, and without the risk of any "big critters" to bother you while swimming!

Cave Tubing, Hiking and Petrogylphs Around the Tanama River
Oct 24th, 2011 • By Gwenn • Category: Central Region, Hiking, History, Nature, TourThough Puerto Rico is full of all sorts of neat things to do, one of the few things we don’t have here is river rapids for tubing or rafting. We did find an adventure that offers "lazy river" tubing through a cave, along with some hiking and Taino cave exploration. Those are some of my favorite things all rolled into one day, and all in beautiful Utuado. So, when some family members came to visit, we decided to check it out.

Clean Campsites and a Nice View in Maricao State Forest
Aug 28th, 2011 • By Gwenn • Category: Central Region, Food & Lodging, NatureI am not a camper, but I know a number of people who are, so I am always looking for places where they can camp in Puerto Rico. I can’t say I have been too impressed with most of the campsites around the island, but Monte del Estado in Maricao gets my vote for probably the nicest, cleanest camping facility.
Hike Las Bocas Canyon to Cascada Grande Waterfall
Aug 7th, 2011 • By Gwenn • Category: Central Region, Hiking, Nature, TourThe Central Mountain range that runs through the middle of Puerto Rico is full of canyons, caves and waterfalls. We recently took a hike, sponsored by the local chapter of the Sierra Club, into Canyon Las Bocas to see the Cascade Grande waterfall. It was an enjoyable, and challenging, day of hiking and river-trekking.
Hiking, Waterfalls and Rappelling in San Cristobal Canyon
Jun 26th, 2011 • By Gwenn • Category: Central Region, Hiking, Nature, TourSan Cristóbal Canyon has been named one of the top 10 Natural Wonders of Puerto Rico. With that high distinction, I needed to see it for myself. It is not the easiest place to get to (being at the bottom of a 500+ foot descent), so it does require some planning and, for best results, a guide! Montaña Explora, a family-run tour company, offers an extreme adventure that includes hiking and rappelling in the canyon. It was tough, but it was so worth the effort!
Northeast Ecological Corridor – Beaches, Turtles and More
Jun 12th, 2011 • By Gwenn • Category: Beach, Nature, Porta Antillas (East), Porta Atlantico (North)The Northeast Ecological Corridor is a wonderful stretch of about 6½ miles of coastline, from Luquillo to Fajardo. We had never been in that area, so after some recent guests told us about the long walk they took along the beach there, we decided we needed to see it ourselves. It really is a wonderful, natural place. We hope that more awareness of Puerto Rico’s natural wonders will encourge people to want to preserve it.
