View the Punta Figuras Lighthouse

Being an island, there are lighthouses all around the coast of Puerto Rico. Many were built in the late 1800s, and many are still in use today! We were down in Arroyo, so we went to check out the restored Punta de las Figuras Lighthouse (Faro Punta de las Figuras). It is not in use nor open to enter, but you can stroll around it and take photos.

Get to Know Ponce with an Isla Caribe Tour

Ponce is a city that has a long history and some amazing architecture. It is a great place to visit, and there is a lot to see. But the city is really spread out. Going on a tour and having someone telling you where to go and explaining the cool things you are seeing is probably the best way to really get to know Ponce. Isla Caribe is a small, locally-run tour company that offers a variety of tours of Ponce and the surrounding areas. We went on their “Ponce Walking Tour” and really feel we now have a better idea of Ponce.

Be an Angel and Interact with Urban Art!

There is a lot of urban art around Puerto Rico these days, which I think brightens everyone’s spirits. Now, in Barceloneta, there is a wall of wings, where you can be photographed as an angel. It is so colorful and wonderful! It was a must stop for us on a recent visit along the north coast. It is guaranteed to make you smile!

Immerse Yourself in Rum History at Ron del Barrilito

Puerto Rico is famous for a lot of things, with rum being one of them. Back in the mid 1870s, Pedro Fernández started making rum at his home to share with his family and friends. Today, Ron del Barrilito is a hand-crafted rum that is still made with the same recipe that Pedro used, and they welcome people from around the world to visit, learn the history, and enjoy this delicious rum through a variety of different tours.

Artistic people who can create something that beautifies the world are so inspiring. Visit the Majestic Ceiba Tree in Patillas

Sometimes nature is just awe-inspiring. A good example is the huge Ceiba pentandra tree, whose size is best appreciated up-close. There are a number of these large, amazing trees throughout Puerto Rico, with some of the oldest and largest growing in Ponce, Vieques, Mayagüez, Patillas, Quebradillas, and Peñuelas. These trees are native to the island, and it is the national tree of Puerto Rico! We recently went to visit the one on Patillas, locally called the "Ceiba Atabey".

Cool Rocks and a Pretty Beach in Yabucoa

In Yabucoa, there are these two neat rock formations that are really interesting. One sort of looks like a sphinx, and it is called "La Piedra El Morrillo". The other is a huge rock that is split right in half, and it is called "Piedra Las Guaretas". While this is not a must-visit place, but if you are in the area, it makes a fun stop. I think you will enjoy it.

Go Hiking in Guayanes Dry Forest

I am always looking new places to go hiking. If you want to try something different from rain forest hiking, you can go to Humacao and go for a hike in a dry forest. The Guayanes Dry Forest has so many great view points, a series of dirt trails that lead to a number of beaches, and an observation tower. We spent a few hours exploring the area, and it is definitely worth checking out!

Search for Hidden Pools in Fajardo

If you are a more active beachgoer, and you want a little exploration in your beach day, trekking to some "secret" pools can be fun. There are some nice, and fairly accessible, hidden pools in Fajardo. The one I think is the best is called Piscina Natural de Cabeza Chiquita. It is accessible from Playa Escondida (or Playa Colora for the more adventurous explorer). While the route is not an easy stroll, it is worth the effort. The prize for your effort is beautiful views from the rocks, and a quiet place to relax.

Currently Closed again....The "New" Fort in Town - Fortín San Gerónimo

Most people don't realize that the land defense system of what is now Old San Juan consisted of much more than the big forts that are popular with visitors today. Fortín San Gerónimo played a vital role in the defense system on the eastern end of the island. That fort has been abandoned and vandalized since 2008. In 2018, a group of volunteers started a renovation project at the fort, but again, the Fortin is closed and abandoned.
