Mundillo is a special kind of lace that is handmade using bobbins to weave thread into a pattern. It is an old craft, coming to Puerto Rico via the Spanish settlers. As time goes on, fewer and fewer people know how to make it - at the risk of becoming a "lost art". The Museo del Mundillo de Puerto Rico in Moca is a showcase for preserving this beautiful art. By offering tours, information, and classes, they are trying to help this craft make a comeback in Puerto Rico.

At one time, the Rio Piedras Mercado and the Paseo de Diego was a vibrant area, with lots of life. Sadly, the area has fallen into almost abandonment. However, the local businesses and community are trying to revitalize the surrounding area. The area has been christened Paseo del Arte, and there are beautiful murals and artwork all around. A few of the restaurants, cafes, and apartment buildings are having new life breathed into them.

Hidden gems often require a extra effort to uncover, and the stairs that lead above Survival Beach in Aguadilla are no exception. The stairs themselves were built to provide access to the beach for the people at the Ramey Air Force Base. There is a locked gate at the top, so if you know the code to open the gate at the top, then you can easily enjoy them from above. But the rest of us need to hike and climb to get to them from the beach.

Sometimes, you head to the beach for more than sand and water. At Playa Cañones (Cannon Beach) in Aguada, you can see the Panama gun mounts that were part of the Harbor Defense of Puerto Rico during WWII. While not a "must-see", they are interesting to see, especially for history buffs, and worth a stop if you are in the area.

When it is hot outside, we often head to the rivers in the central mountains to cool off. Recently, we took a day and visited five charcas in the town of Juana Díaz, which is located about 90 minutes from the San Juan area. Out of the charcas we visited that day, Charco Las Bambúas was the most beautiful, and the most difficult to get to. This beautiful waterfall and pool is only for the more agile and adventurous, as there really is not an easy trail to get to it. Charco Las Bambuas is a true example of a hard-earned prize!
