Personally, I think one of the prettiest things about the Holidays is all of the lights. And Puerto Rico does not disappoint. Most towns decorate their town squares and government buildings with loads of lights and displays. This is especially true in Old San Juan. Check it out...usually from just after Thanksgiving until mid- January.

Puerto Rico has been smoke-free in all public enclosed spaces since 2007. This includes restaurants, clubs, discos, casinos, bars, buildings, shopping centers, businesses, elevators, public transportation, ambulances, hotel rooms designated as no-smoking rooms, and private cars when children are present as passengers.

Besides the Forts, there are a number of smaller museums in Old San Juan that are really enjoyable, and I think are definitely worth making time in your schedule to visit. Two that we really like are the Casa Blanca and the Museum of the Americas. You'll find information on these, and many others, in the following article.

If you like a little excitement while on your vacation, you can take a trip to Carabali Rainforest Park. This 600 acre facility, located in the foothills of the El Yunque National Forest, offers a wide range of activities. They have a fun ATV tour to get your heart pumping.

A visit to the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) Botanical Garden (Jardin Botanico) is an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours. Here's a map to help guide you through the gardens.

Part 3 of our San Juan Self Guided Walking Tour series sets you off to see Fort San Cristobal, the Capitol, and shopping!

The Mount Britton Trail is a 0.8 mile, one-way hike. It starts a short walk from Road 9938 off of Rd 191. But it climbs 594 feet in this short distance and get to an elevation of 2,493 feet. The trail is narrow, but paved, and well-maintained.

El Yunque National Forest has many trails, streams, rivers, and waterfalls that can be enjoyed year-round. Though the forest covers 28,000 acres, when most people (especially tourists) speak of "going to the rain forest" they're referring to the Recreation Area on the north side of the Sierra de Luquillo Mountains.

Part 2 of our Old San Juan Self Guided Walking Tour series takes you to El Morro and down Calle Cristo to see the sites.

So you decided to spend some time exploring Old San Juan? You will not be disappointed! The old city is a small area, only 7 square blocks. But there is so much to do and see in that small area that you can spend days there and never see everything.

Ask anyone about what they consider a "Must See" while visiting Puerto Rico and they will most likely say Old San Juan. That is because this old historic city offers so much. There is literally something for everyone: beautiful views (great for photographers), architecture, restaurants, museums, shopping, history, outdoor-art, people-watching, music, dance, bars and nightclubs. But, to get the most out of a visit to Old San Juan, it is best to follow a self guided walking tour (like ours!) so that you don't miss out on something you really would have liked to have seen.

Seven Seas is a lovely, small, crescent-shaped beach, with soft sand and almond and palm trees that provide some protection from the sun. The views are fantastic, just beautiful to look out at the water and see the lighthouse in the distance. Water is blue and beautiful.

If you are a sun worshiper, a beach lover or snorkel fanatic, I don't think a trip to Puerto Rico would be complete without a trip to Culebra. It has been voted one of the prettiest beaches in the world!

The Humacao Wildlife Refuge (now called the Punta Santiago Natural Reserve in Humacao) is located on the east coast of Puerto Rico. Within the reserve you'll find numerous trails for walking, biking and light hiking, long stretches of beach, spectacular views of the coast, lots of fishing opportunities, an area with picnic pavilions, some ruins from the area's history as a sugar plantation, old bunkers from wars past, and the availability of kayaks and bikes to rent.

The Plaza Mercado in Santurce is a market place with vendors selling things, including all sorts of fresh, local fruits and veggies. We definitely make an effort to stop by these vendors to discover something new. The colors and fragrances alone make it worth the trip.

Pinones mangrove forest (Bosque de Pinones) offers a unique experience for tourists and locals alike. We find that almost no matter what we like doing, we can find it and spend an enjoyable day or evening in this area. Food, music, exercise, beach...it has it all!

There are plenty of things to do on your PR vacation that don’t require perfect weather. This article will give you some ideas for when the weather doesn't cooperate with your plans.

Balneario El Escambron is a little beach, just outside of Old San Juan, that is part of the Blue Flag beach program. It is located in Puerta de Tierra section of town, next to the old Normandie Hotel and the Parque Sixto Escobar. Great little beaches for the whole family.

There are three bioluminescent bays (bio-bays) in Puerto Rico. La Laguna Grande in Fajardo is pretty bright (it varies with conditions) , and it is convenient to do from San Juan and the main island. Kayaking there is a magical experience.
